The Dillon Garden Club celebrated Arbor Day with the planting of a live oak tree at the City of Dillon Wellness Center on Friday, December 6, at 10:00 a.m.
Also, the Glove & Trowel Club of Dillon was present for the program.
The theme for 2024 is “Trees Are Terrific”.
The program consisted of a Welcome by Carolyn Lupo, President of the Dillon Garden Club, followed by an Invocation by Rev. Mike Rouse.
City of Dillon Mayor Tally McColl thanked the City of Dillon garden clubs for their help with the gardening needs of the City of Dillon prior to his signing the Proclamation.
Donna Borders recited “Trees’ by Joyce Kilmer.
Pat Laird gave the history of Arbor Day from its beginning in Nebraska on April 10, 1872. On that one day, it was estimated that 1 million trees were planted. The garden club chose the Live Oak tree this year as the tree will remain green year-round and is alive year-round. This oak tree is used as a shade tree or as an ornamental tree. In the days of wooden ships, the oak tree was used in the construction of the ships.
The Seven Sisters Oak Tree in Louisiana is estimated to be between 600 and 1500 years old. The Angel Oak Tree in Charleston is 400+ years old and will rival any other you’ve ever seen.
Representative Jackie Hayes expressed his appreciation for all that the garden clubs do for the community.
Beth Rouse led in the singing by everyone of “America”.
Rev. Mike Rouse closed in prayer.
