COLUMBIA, S.C. (Oct. 28, 2024) – Once again channeling his inner Halloween spirit, State Treasurer Curtis Loftis has a scared up another list of South Carolinians with “spooky names” that are owed unclaimed money in hopes of enticing them to claim funds that are rightfully theirs.
“We’re not playing tricks. We have more than $950 million in treats of unclaimed property at the State Treasurer’s Office that we’d like to help return this Halloween season,” said Treasurer Loftis. “It’s frighteningly easy to see if you or anyone you know is due unclaimed money. Simply visit our website at treasurer.sc.gov and click on Unclaimed Property to begin your search.”
Millions of dollars are transferred to the program annually by companies that cannot locate the rightful owners, and the State Treasurer enjoys finding creative ways to pique South Carolinians’ interest to go search the state’s database for their name to claim these funds.

Examples of the types of property covered by the program include dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, unclaimed insurance proceeds and forgotten utility deposits. The State Treasurer’s Office serves as custodian of unclaimed funds and holds them until claimed by the rightful owners.
