The Dillon Lady Wildcats edged the visiting Latta Lady Vikings 3-2 in varsity softball action played in Dillon on Wednesday, April 17.
On the first play of the game, Latta’s Samantha Townsend was injured as she turned her ankle on first base.
The Latta Lady Vikings placed the first score of the game in the top of the third inning when Paisley Jackson singled that scored a run.
Dillon’s Makenna Meekins singled in the bottom of the third inning that helped the Lady Wildcats knot the score at 1.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Dillon’s Paige Sherman singled that scored a run to give Dillon a 2-1 lead.
The Latta Lady Vikings quickly responded when Maddie Berry singled that help Latta knot the score at 2.
The score remained knotted at 2 through the seventh inning that forced an extra inning.
The Dillon Lady Wildcats picked up the win when Paige Sherman blasted one to centerfield and doubled with the bases loaded to give the Wildcats the win 3-2.
Paige Sherman, who was honored on this night, Senior night, picked up the win. She struck out 13, walked 1, 5 hits, and allowed 2 runs of which were not earned.
Latta’s Paisley Jackson began on the mound for the Lady Vikings and pitched 4 innings and gave up 4 hits, 2 runs, struck out 6, and walked no one. Maddie Berry pitched in relief in the bottom of the fifth inning and allowed 2 hits, 2 earned runs, walked 3, and struck out 6 in 3.1 innings.
Dillon connected for 6 hits in the game with Paige Sherman with 2 hits for 4 at-bats with 2 rbi, and Cierra Grice with 2 hits, a walk, and scored 2 runs in 3 at-bats. Makenna Meekins had a hit, a rbi, and a walk in her 3 at-bats. Makayla Huggins had a hit in 4 at-bats.
Latta had 5 hits in the game with Chayse Walters collecting 2 hits and scored 2 runs in her 4 at-bats. Samantha Townsend had a hit in 1 at-bat. Erika Roberts had a hit in 3 at-bats, and Maddie Berry had a hit in 4 at-bats.
Dillon committed 4 errors in the game while Latta did not commit an error.
Latta is 12-4-1 for the season.
